On the 15th January, 1704, Mary Brookes was married to Thomas Channing in Dorchester at the age of just 16.

Within a year, she was on trial for her life, accused of killing her husband.

Was Mary Channing a callous murderer? Or was she just a naive young woman whose life simply spiralled out of control? This fictionalised account of Mary’s story draws on all the available facts from the time and follows her life from when she was forced to marry a man she didn’t love through to her horrific execution just two years later.

The Burning of Mary Channing: A fictionalised account of a true story: This story held me from the beginning. Loved this story line, though my thoughts held out for the truth and justice. Glad I didn’t live in this timeline.

The Burning of Mary Channing: A fictionalised account of a true story: Takes you back in time. A real page turner that takes you back to the early 18th century. Easy to read. A couple of errors that need revising (such as incorrect pronouns). Overall a captivating and sad story well told.

The Burning of Mary Channing: A fictionalised account of a true story: Tragic beyond words Having previously studied the life and death of Mary Channing, I found this book highly interesting.Much of it was of course supposition in the details, but the attention to every aspect was powerful reading. The one thing I did find a little strange was the sex of Mary's baby. It is recorded that Mary had given birth to a son, not a daughter as this story states. What became of the child is lost to history, although I would like to think he survived and went on to have a good life. The details of Mary's execution were pretty graphic. I could almost smell the wood burning. I truly hope Mary was not alive when the fire was lit. Man's inhumanity to his fellow human beings, could not conceive of a more barbaric way to execute someone, especially a teenage girl who may indeed have been innocent.A great book to read and I look forward to more from this author.

The Burning of Mary Channing: A fictionalised account of a true story: A true page turner . I don’t have much spare time but I certainly found time for this book ! I finished it in two nights , it was that good . Shocking to think it was true and how cruel life was then. I’m hard to please with novels but I sure loved this . Definitely recommend.

The Burning of Mary Channing: A fictionalised account of a true story: An extremely good read I was obsessed with reading this book every spare minute I had. I found it compelling and it had me hooked.best book I have read in a long time. I became quite emotional when it came to Mary's demise. Disappointed that the other two main females were not brought back into the story towards the end

The Burning of Mary Channing: A fictionalised account of a true story: Fascinating read! Really evokes the atmosphere of early 18th century rural England. Based on a true story, all the restrictions and superstitions combine to build into Mary's story. Makes one realise how far removed modern attitudes are from the life and times of Mary Channing. A great story!
